WHO ?
Hi! I'm Donald Régnier, musician and developer from France, and the guy behind the Music In Browser [MiB] project. I started both music and coding at an early age, back in the 80's, which led me to earn an IT Degree and a Jazz Degree in the 90's. Even if I have made my living as a musician, producer & music teacher, I've always been coding on the side as a hobby and it's been a long time I wanted to incorporate my knowledge in both fields into a single project. Time was always the problem though. Then arrived the pandemic. Bad news was all gigs got cancelled. Good news was a lot of free time !! So I sat down and started to mess around with Javascript and audio possibilities. After a couple of days, the idea of the MiB project was born: a set of little tools for musicians that can be executed directly in a web browser.
WHY ?
My main motivation is to create tools that I would have loved to own when I started studying music years ago. Also, when first music apps appeared, my personal user experience was that they were created by developers with interest in music, but with a lack of understanding of the profesional musician's needs, especially in the field of self-education. Of course, Music apps have improved a lot over the past decade but I think there's still room for new ideas and implementations.
WHAT ?
I quickly decided basic guidelines for the MiB project. Besides being able to execute in the web browser, each app has to be small, intuitive and fullfilling a single goal. It has to be effective, cover the topic extensively and stimulate musician's creativity. Apps will be developed to be used on a computer first, as I think it's a much more effective user interface than a phone, but I will work on responsiveness for some of them, so they can be used on mobile devices as well.
HOW ?
Developing apps, even small ones, is very time consuming, and has to be sustained by a business model. The one I've chosen is free donations from the users. The reason for that is we, people living in Europe, the US or any other rich country, may feel that spending a couple of bucks on an app is no big deal, but it's unfortunately still not the case for a lot of people living in countries with lower levels of income. By donating a little amount to the project, you're not only helping to keep it free for other people, but also free of ads. Also remember that sharing and spreading the word is vital for independant projects like this one. Finally, every app is a work in progress kind of thing... if you would like to see specific functionalities implemented, or just have any idea or feedback, the best thing to do is to post a comment on the app page on my website:
