Here’s a post dedicated to my duet with Japanese flute player Yuriko Kimura.

I met Yuriko for the first time in 2022 and was immediately impressed by her musicality, sound and fantastic skills: she plays all flutes from piccolo to bass flute, excels both in classical and jazz music and she’s a fearless improviser who can adapt to any musical situation with taste and sensitivity. I knew I had met the “perle rare”, and was more than happy when she accepted to play some of my compositions in a flute-guitar duet setup.

After a couple of rehearsals, I organized a little live session in my home studio. Here are the four tunes we recorded.

The piece “Mima” was especially written for the session with Yuriko’s playing in mind and is dedicated to Japanese table tennis player Mima Ito.

“Choro pra Hermeto” was originally written for the voice & guitar duet “Iguazú” that I share with my wife, and recorded on our album “Duetando” (ADL Records, 2012). It is dedicated to the great Hermeto Pascoal.

“Choro Misterioso” and “Choro pra Guinga” were written somewhere between 2015 and 2018, probably for some concerts with a choro band I had in Ecuador during that time. But it’s the first time I got them recorded. “Choro Misterioso” is dedicated to Thelonious Monk and “Choro pra Guinga” is for the eponym Brazilian composer.

The music is inspired by Brazilian choro music, a long-time favorite genre of mine.

Thanks for listening and please feel free to leave a comment !
